Welcome to September's edition of eNews.

 

This month I would like to draw your attention to three important events that are taking place in the Renal Calendar:

  

10th European Peritoneal Dialysis Meeting

21-24 October 2011, ICC, Birmingham

The Renal Association, along with the BRS, are pleased to be partnering the 2011 EuroPD Meeting. This year's theme is 'The Fundamentals and Barriers to Home Based Therapy Implementation' which relates to the understanding that to implement PD programs, we need to understand not only the basics of PD, but also the clinical science that underpins its use and leads its development. Joint Meeting of the Association of British Clinical Diebetologists and the Renal Association

23 February 2012, ICC, Birmingham

We are pleased to announce that the Renal Association will be holding a joint one day meeting with the Association of British Clinical Diebetologists (ABCD) on Thursday 23rd February 2012 at the ICC, Birmingham. This meeting brings together internationally renowned leaders in the field of diabetes related renal disease. Registration is now open, please click here.

 

2012 Renal Association Conference

12-14 June 2012, The Sage, Gateshead

We look forward to welcoming you to our 2012 conference at the Sage, Gateshead on 12-14 June 2012. Registration and abstract submission will open on 3 October 2011.  Please refer to the Renal Association Conference website for further information and the scientific programme.

 

The Renal Association is keen to support the nephrologists of the future and are offering free membership for one year to all new clinical trainees and Phd students. Finally, this month we are inviting expressions of interest for the position of Honorary Secretary.

Honorary Secretary

Expressions of interest are sought for this post. The Honorary Secretary will serve for an initial period of 4 years. The Honorary Secretary will normally be appointed as a Trustee of the Association and provides general support to the President, Trustees, Executive Committee Members and affiliated individuals. The Honorary Secretary plays a key role in delivering the annual meeting.

Expressions of interest are sought by Wednesday 30 November 2011; the job description for the role of Honorary Secretary and the application procedure can be found by clicking here

The Renal Association is very keen to support, and have input from, trainees who have committed to a career in nephrology, and is offering 1 year's free membership to Clinical Trainees and Phd students joining the Association in 2012. This offer would apply for one calendar year, commencing 1 January 2012. Please forward this offer to any colleagues or friends who you think might be interested and ask that they contact renal@mci-group.com for more information. 

Chair of Renal Association Terminology Committee

Expressions of interest are sought for this post. The Chair will serve for an initial period of 3 years. The Terminology Committee has been established by the Renal Association (RA) in collaboration with the Renal Information Exchange Group (RIXG) and its remit is to advise their parent bodies and through them, the UK Terminology Centre (UKTC) on all aspects of SNOMED CT codes relevant to all aspects of the practice of nephrology in the UK within the NHS. Suitable applicants will have experience of renal computing and of the technical aspects of classification and coding kidney diseases. The formation of a Terminology Committee was approved by the Renal Association Executive Committee in June 2011.

Request for Mentors Questionnaire

The recent survey of Renal Association consultant and NCG members revealed an unmet need for improved mentoring and access to careers advice.  Key findings from the survey were:

  • 80% of the 204 respondents do not have/have never had a mentor
  • 37% of 159 respondents would like a mentor in future
  • 60% of 159 respondents would find it helpful to approach mentors via the RA
  • 68% of 192 respondents would be interested in mentoring a younger colleague
  • 58% of 159 respondents have not  had advice on career development/progression

We are inviting all consultants, academic nephrologists and NCG members to get involved in a Renal Association mentoring scheme. If you would like to offer your support as a mentor, please complete the "request for mentors" questionnaire click here  to give your contact details and what mentoring support you would like to offer. Please respond by 30 November.
