Dear Colleagues,

 

With just a couple of weeks to go until the joint RA/BRS conference, registration remains open until Tuesday 31 May 2011 - click here for full details. I encourage you to register if you have not done so already as this year boasts an exceptional programme and array of speakers. The meeting will be hugely enjoyable. I would also encourage you to attend the Equal Opportunities Committee inaugural dinner. Apart from an excellent meal in the company of friends there will be an inspirational talk from Professor Debbie Sharp, Professor of Primary Health Care at the University of Bristol - see below for more details.

I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Andrew Lewington who has been nominated as the next Chair of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee. We wish him every success in this new role and we are confident he will continue with the fantastic work undertaken by Robert Mactier.

This month we are also pleased to announce that the three Executive Committee positions have been filled by Sunil Bhandari, Claire Sharpe and Alistair Hutchison - congratulations to them all. They will undertake their new positions later on this year.

Congratulations to Andrew Lewington

We would like to congratulate Andrew Lewington on being successfully nominated as the next Chair of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee. Andrew will take up his new position at the executive meeting in September and we wish him every success in this new role with the Renal Association.

New Executive Committee Members

UK Renal Registry Director - Position Available

The UK Renal Registry are still accepting applications for a a dynamic and innovative director with experience of large clinical databases who will manage the day to day operational aspects of the UKRR, support the Chair in acting as the 'public face' of the Registry and undertake research projects. Call for Applications - Rare Disease Working Group

Kidney Research UK, in partnership with the British Kidney Patients Association, and working with the Renal Association announces a call for applications from those who wish to apply to setup and run a Rare Disease Working Group. Grant support to cover meeting and literature activities is available along with central infrastructure support coordinated under the RA Rare Diseases Committee. Invitation to apply for the acute kidney injury guideline GDG membership

The National Clinical Guidelines Centre (NCGC) which is hosted by the Royal College of Physicians has been commissioned by NICE to develop an evidence-based clinical guideline on the prevention, detection and managemtn of acute kidney injury up to the point of renal replacement therapy. They are currently seeking to recruit healthcare professionals for the guideline development group (GDG).  Click here for more information and to apply. 

Clinical Practice Guidelines
The final version of the RA guideline on Acute Kidney Injury is now available, along with all of the other RA guidelines at http://www.renal.org/Clinical/GuidelinesSection/Guidelines.aspx

The 14 guideline modules of the
the 5th Edition of RA guidelines (2009-2012) were completed on 8 Mar 2011 and were published in Nephron Clinical Practice on 6 May 2011. This e-publication of the RA guidelines (Nephron Clin Pract 2011;118 (Suppl.1):c1-c390) has been bookmarked to facilitate searching of the document and is available free to all users at http://content.karger.com/ProdukteDB/produkte.asp?Aktion=Ausgabe&Ausgabe=255298&ProduktNr=228539

Fellowships & Research Programmes                                                                     
New Joint Fellowship with ISN

The Renal Association has recently established a new joint fellowship with the ISN. Together with two existing joint fellowships offered by KRUK and ISN, there are now 3 annual fellowships available to enable suitably qualified overseas trainees to undertake a period of clinical and research training in UK renal units. This is often highly beneficial to both the home and host institutions since the fellow would be expected to return to their home institution following completion. Application deadlines are normally in June and December. Further details are available through the ISN website.

Bernd Teersteegen Award 2011  

This annual award of 8000 Euro is awarded internationally for basic and particularly for clinical research related to chronic renal insufficiency and to advances in treatment of endstage renal disease. Submission deadline is Friday 15 July 2011. Click here for more information and for details of how to apply. 

Funding Opportunity for Intercalated Degrees    

Kidney Research UK is offering grants of £5000 over one year to medical students undertaking research that is directly relevant to the kidney and kidney disease as part of an intercalated degree, commencing in October 2011 (academic year 2011/12). More information

First National Gitelman / Barrter Support Day 

Fiona Karet is organising the first support day for patients with Gitelman or Barrter Syndrom and their families on Saturday 11 June 2011 in Central London. The Kidney Education Network 2nd Annual Meeting
The Renal/Kidney Education Network is a new group that has been set up to support the delivery of high quality education for patients with chronic kidney disease, and those caring for them. Their 2nd Annual Meeting will take place on Wednesday 6 July 2011. More details
6th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Cardiorenal Forum
This one day meeting will take place on Friday 7th October 2011 at the Royal Society in London and will highlight the important clinical overlap that exists between patients presenting with a primary cardiovascular or renal problem. Please click here for more information.
