| | | Summer is almost on us and I know many of you will be looking forward to those summer holidays after a long 6 months of hard work but before you go please take a moment to review this month's eNews. We are asking for expressions of interest for the Chair of the International Committee, following Jo Adu's retirement, expressions of interest for 3 executive posts, an assistant webmaster and Chair of the Renal Registry. If you think you can help and support the Association please get in touch. It's a short deadline 31st of May.
The first diet of the Nephrology Specialist Certificate Exam was a great success and Jonathan Fox and colleagues, who worked hard to achieve this, should be congratulated.
If you have any old photos that are relevant to the history of the RA we would love to hear from you. John Feehally is putting together preparations for the 60th birthday celebrations and wants as much photographic evidence as possible.
Finally eNews is full this month with meeting announcements and if you haven't already looked catch the NSF headlines. Please also note the Manchester / Autumn Advanced Nephrology Course, and the Raine Award, Walls and Lockwood bursaries, which are all now open for applications. Remember we also have student elective bursaries available.
Enjoy those sunny summer days we are promised this year

Your pictures wanted!
The Renal Association is the oldest renal professional organisation in the world.
A small group of RA members chaired by John Feehally is beginning to prepare for our 60th anniversary celebrations next year.
We are hoping to gather as much photographic evidence as possible of our history.
Do you have any interesting photos of:
· past RA meetings or other events
· RA 'senior figures' [no strict definition!]
· anything else relating to RA and the development of nephrology in the UK
With your permission we would like to archive all these images for posterity in a digital format, and perhaps use them as part of our celebration next year.
I will gladly receive any material in any format by any route of transmission.
Please contact John Feehally - jf27@le.ac.uk ; 07843 278459; 0116 258 4132 | Bursaries and Awards
The Renal Association make a number of awards and bursaries available each year. Applications are now being received for the following awards, please forward these details to any colleagues who you think might be interested in applying. Submissions may be made between May 1st and August 31st. Decisions will usually be made by the end of September. Late applications will NOT be accepted. AEG Raine Award The Raine Award was established in memory of Tony Raine, Professor of Renal Medicine at Barts, following his tragically early death in 1995. This prestigious annual award is made to a relatively junior investigator (usually 35 years of age or less) who has made a significant contribution to renal research. The award of £300 is only available to Renal Association members. The awardee would be expected to give a presentation of the work which has led up to the award at a Renal Association meeting. Walls Bursaries These bursaries were established in memory of the late Professor John Walls, President of the Renal Association 1995-1998, who died in 2001. Their aim is to help Renal Association members to spend short periods (e.g. weeks or months) at other centres, generally outside the UK, to learn new laboratory techniques or gain new clinical skills. £1,000 is awarded to help Renal Association members to - present work
- visit an overseas laboratory or clinical Nephrology unit (often these will be collaborating centres).
Lockwood Award These were established in memory of the late Dr Martin Lockwood, a distinguished investigator and active member of the Renal Association, who died in 1999. They are the successor to the Milne-Muehrcke award. £1,000 is awarded to help Renal Association members to present work and combine this with a visit to a collaborating laboratory or clinical nephrology unit overseas. Full details on all the above awards, along with the application process is available by clicking here. | Nephrology SCE Update March saw the first diet of the exam. 33 candidates sat it , about half from overseas. Of UK candidates, half were SpRs who were not required to take the exam. Pass mark was 67%, and 81% of candidates in UK training posts passed. Fee for candidates taking it in the UK is £800 (£1000 if taken abroad) but agreement from College that those taking SCEs in 2008-10 to be offered one re-sit free-of-charge. Jonathan Fox and colleagues have worked hard to make this a success and should be congratulated. | NSF Headlines May 2009 : Working for better kidney care

Primary Cilium
Renal Association/European Society for Paediatric Nephrology Joint Meeting 3rd Sept 2009 University of Birmingham, UK Primary cilia are evolutionarily conserved organelles of uncertain function which were first described in 1898. Almost every cell in the body carries a primary cilium. In the past ten years, abnormalities of the primary cilium have been associated with several important diseases affecting the kidney including polycystic kidney disease, nephronopthisis, Meckel's syndrome and Bardet-Biedl Syndrome. These ciliopathies have in turn led to new insights into the functions of the primary cilium and its related organelle, the centrosome or basal body.
This one-day meeting will highlight and summarise for the practising clinician the major scientific advances in this rapidly changing field as well as the exciting therapeutic and diagnostic advances in the management of cystic kidney diseases. Click here

10-12 June 2009 The management of end stage renal failure by dialysis forms a central component of all renal units. However, it is often the least intensively taught component of nephrology training. The aim of this intensive course is to provide a thorough introduction to dialysis, from basics to new developments.
The invited expert faculty will provide comprehensive coverage of all aspects of dialysis and ESRF through a mixture of informal lectures and workshops. The course is aimed at Specialist Registrars in nephrology, but will also be of interest to other health care professionals involved in the management of patients with chronic renal failure.
