With regards to the Renal Associations' Presidential tenure, most of you will be aware that earlier this year Charlie Tomson was elected as President Elect and this was ratified at the annual meeting in Liverpool in April. Peter Mathieson's tenure as President of the Association runs until May 2010 when Charlie will take over the reins.  Peter will then become Past President for a further three years.

We wish Peter as President all the support as he prepares for the 60th Anniversary of the Association in 2010 and to Charlie when he takes over the presidential seat at next year's AGM.

Finally, the deadline for the prestigious Raine and other RA awards is the 31st August. No late applications will be accepted.  Further details can be found by clicking here.

Best wishes

Honorary Secretary

Flu Flu Forum

The RA has established a forum for members to discuss practical issues related to the management of patients with H1N1 influenza. Many Renal Units are likely to face considerable logistic difficulties in maintaining normal operational practices if the HPA predictions about the spread and magnitude of the pandemic hold true. I hope this site will prove a valuable resource for the renal community at this time and I would encourage you to share both your problems and potential solutions. The flu forum can be found at by clicking here

Cystic Kidney Disease and the Role of the
Primary Cilium

Primary cilia are evolutionarily conserved organelles of uncertain function which were first described in 1898. Almost every cell in the body carries a primary cilium. In the past ten years, abnormalities of the primary cilium have been associated with several important diseases affecting the kidney including polycystic kidney disease, nephronopthisis, Meckel's syndrome and Bardet-Biedl Syndrome. These ciliopathies have in turn led to new insights into the functions of the primary cilium and its related organelle, the centrosome or basal body.

This one-day meeting will highlight and summarise for the practising clinician the major scientific advances in this rapidly changing field as well as the exciting therapeutic and diagnostic advances in the management of cystic kidney diseases. Click here

Early bird registration is now closed.

The meeting has been approved for CPD accreditation.

Cardio Optimising care at the Cardio-Renal interface
Monday 21st September, Royal College of Physicians

We are pleased to announce this joint conference that has been organised by the Royal College of Physicians, UK Renal Association and British Cardiovascular Society in association with the Cardio-Renal forum. This builds on the success of the 3 previous annual meetings of the Cardio-Renal Forum, a successful collaboration which has contributed to bringing the two specialities of Cardiology and Nephrology closer together within the UK.

The programme (please click on this link for full details) contains topics of mutual current interest and importance for the two specialities, delivered by excellent speakers, expert in their respective fields. On this occasion there will also be contributions from not just one, but 3 National Clinical Directors (Cardiology, Renal and Primary Care) and so we are likely to obtain insights into the future shaping of our clinical services. Our meetings finish with a debate, usually lively, and this is certain to be the case on this occasion.

The meeting provides 6 CPD Credits and is suitable for consultants, trainees, scientists and specialist nurses working in the two disciplines. Please do support the meeting by enrolling ASAP, as there are 'early bird' discounts still in operation at £75.00 per place.
