My name is Jean-Louis Clemendot.

I am 59 years old, married with three children, passionate about navigation and I am a dialysis patient. In a nutshell, that is my life!

Yesterday, December first, I set off to sail alone across the Atlantic

Dear The Renal Association,

Welcome to the Renal Association's 60th year!

An important milestone for the Association, a milestone that will be marked with a variety of events and articles throughout the year.

We start by introducing our new look eNews, where this month an image of our first president Arnold Osman is shown above. And, if you haven't already seen the new website then please do take a look (www.renal.org) I think you'll be impressed.

The site will also highlight 60 years of renal science - a project that John Feehally has worked closely on over the past months. Please follow this link to John's page where over the coming months he will highlight an abstract per month of key importance from the past. This month John has chosen - Nephrotic proteinuria: a tubular lesion, T Freeman & A M Joekes [1956].

Over the year eNews will be showcasing 'Raine Award Winners' those who won the award over the past ten years and what has happened to them. There will also be an interview with June Raine. June is the wife of the late Tony Raine, Professor of Renal Medicine at Barts. Tony Raine tragically died in 1995 and the prestigious Raine annual award was named in his honour.

The interviews kick off with Alice Smith, Raine Award winner of 2000. Thank you Alice for an interesting and motivational interview.

As well as all of the celebrations in 2010 we also mark the year with changes within the management of the Association.

As you are aware from previous communications our colleagues from the BAPN have joined with us as an Association and we are delighted to welcome their President Mary Mcgraw who will, as of this month, sit on the committee of Trustees.

Congratulations are in order to both Jonathan Fox, who will take the position of Honorary Treasurer and to Martin Raftery who has been appointed unopposed as Clinical Vice-President. There will be a period of hand-over when they will both take up their positions formally later in the year.

And finally we need an Academic Vice President. If you think you can help support and guide renal research in the UK and beyond forward, then you should consider standing for election as Academic Vice-President. The Association needs a strong force helping to support Renal Science in all its multi-faceted forms.

What a year we have planned ahead - please read on for more!

Honorary Secretary

The Raine Award was established in memory of Tony Raine, Professor of Renal Medicine at Barts, following his tragically early death in 1995. This prestigious annual award is made to a relatively junior investigator (usually 35 years of age or less) who has made a significant contribution to renal research, especially through presentations made at the Renal Association. As part of the 60th Anniversary celebrations we intend to look back at what has happened to those who received the award over the last 10 years.
In memory of
Professor Arthur Colville Kennedy CBE
Arthur Colville Kennedy (22nd October 1922), one of the pioneers of renal medicine and in particular the treatment of acute renal failure, died on 30th December 2009. He was born and trained in Glasgow where he became the Muirhead Chair of Medicine (1979-88) and was President of the European Dialysis and Transplant Association (1972-5) and of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (1986-8). Following retiral he held a number of posts including Chairmanship of the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board and the Presidency of the BMA. He was characterised by his energy and determination in pursuit of his goals: a reserved, modest and courteous man who also made many friends. He is survived by his wife Nancy and their two daughters, a granddaughter and two great grandchildren.

Working for better kidney care
NHS Kidney Care's website goes live.

CQUIN payments could put AKI on the acute trust map. Commissioning for Quality and Innovation, CQUINs, were introduced as part of the quality framework in the wake of the vision set out in "High Quality Care for All". The framework was launched in April 2009 to strengthen quality as the organising principle of the NHS. In the first year 0.5% of overall Trust income came in the form of CQUIN payments. Read on

Twice weekly dialysis rears its ugly head again.  I don't know whether it's the thought of the ghost of Christmas past or a Scrooge mentality, as is claimed to pervade football club boardrooms at this time of the year, that's responsible or not but over the last few weeks several people have contacted me to enquire about the suggestion of adopting twice weekly haemodialysis as an efficiency measure. This is unacceptable and indeed as we move towards Payment by Results for dialysis the intention is to fund each dialysis session that patients receive. Read on

Getting the finance director to look at the quality report first ... because then she will know that the clinical service is sustainable and in good shape.  Mike Richards the Cancer Tsar, now Sir Michael, said that to me when I was considering taking on the role of National Clinical Director for Kidney Care in 2006. It's even more true today but we now have a whole new vocabulary for quality - quality accounts, quality indicators, CQUINs, the National Quality Board, quality standards, to name a few ... Read on

Study for Focusing on choice of modality for pre-dialysis patients
Kidney Research UK, in partnership with Baxter Healthcare Limited and in collaboration with the British Renal Society and the Renal Association, announces an open call for proposals for research to investigate patient choice of dialysis modality. The research should focus on the factors that influence patient choice and then develop and examine the clinical impact of a tool designed to aid patients in making an informed dialysis modality choice.

A survey into research at commercial dialysis units.
Occasionally members have commented that they have experienced difficulties related conducting clinical research at commercial dialysis units.  We have therefore designed a short survey to explore this issue. It should only take 5 minutes to complete and the results will be reviewed at the next meeting of the National Renal Specialty Group.

Click here to complete the survey.

Many thanks for your help.  Any queries can be sent to martin.wilkie@sth.nhs.uk

The Intensive Care Society Seminar
09 April 2010, Churchill House, London

The first part of this seminar will focus on updates on the evolving definitions and diagnosis of acute kidney injury, our ability to predict renal outcome and current evidence for the dose of renal support when indicated.

This will include recent data from consensus meetings and recently published original research. We will then hear from a specialist in renal transplantation medicine who will give us a nephrologist's view of AKI and how the recovery of the transplanted kidney may provide insight in to mechanisms of AKI in critical care.

Finally we will focus on the interaction of other organ failures with AKI. This will include both the influence of other organ failures on renal function and how AKI may affect the function of other organs.

Dialysis 2010
A comprehensive three-day course on dialysis and the management of patients with end stage renal failure

9-11 June 2010
Sir William Wells Atrium, Royal Free Hospital, London

The management of end stage renal failure by dialysis forms a central component of all renal units.  However, it is often the least intensively taught aspect of nephrology training.  This in-depth course is a thorough introduction to dialysis, from basics to new developments.  Expert faculty will provide comprehensive coverage of all aspects of dialysis and ESRF through a mixture of informal lectures and workshops.  Although the course is aimed at Specialist Registrars in nephrology, it will also be of interest to other health care professionals involved in the management of patients with chronic renal failure.
