The Raine Award was established in memory of Tony Raine, Professor of Renal Medicine at Barts, following his tragically early death in 1995. This prestigious annual award is made to a relatively junior investigator (usually 35 years of age or less) who has made a significant contribution to renal research, especially through presentations made at the Renal Association. As part of the 60th Anniversary celebrations we intend to look back at what has happened to those who received the award over the last 10 years. This month we talk to Coralie Bingham, winner in 2001.

Green Nephrology Programme

From this month, eNews will feature updates on the Green Nephrology Programme, which is exploring the impact of kidney care upon the environment and aligning initiatives to reduce this alongside improvements in efficiency and cost. If this all sounds too good to be true, follow the link above to see the first three case studies and the results of the Green Nephrology Survey into Sustainability in Renal Units.

Finally, we've teamed up with the 10:10 Campaign to produce a 10:10 Renal Checklist (all available at the link above).
NSF Headlines February 2010
Working for better kidney care

CKD, what's new in 2010? Are people still asking you about CKD ? Well if they aren't you're lucky!! When should GPs exception report ? How do the incomprehensible Read codes for raised albumin creatinine ratio or other measures of protienuria relate to the CKD 6 marker in the quality and outcomes framework?  These and many more questions from the simple to the complex are covered in a new guide from the NHS employers set out in an easy to follow question and answer style.

Imaging standards in AKI. The good practice recommendations from the National Imaging Board now state that "ultrasound should be easily available to establish renal size and to investigate possible renal obstruction for an extended working day, Monday to Friday (eg 0800-2200) and at least 0900-1700 at weekends. Ultrasound imaging in acute kidney injury should be performed within 24 hours of admission and if there is clinical evidence of an infected, obstructed kidney within 6 hours".

NICE Guidance on venous thromboembolism.  Did you know that venous thromboembolism (pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis) is two times more likely in people with CKD than without?  This NICE Guideline on VTE is therefore highly relevant to all those who work in kidney services.

A survey into research at commercial dialysis units.
Occasionally members have commented that they have experienced difficulties related conducting clinical research at commercial dialysis units.  We have therefore designed a short survey to explore this issue. It should only take 5 minutes to complete and the results will be reviewed at the next meeting of the National Renal Specialty Group.

Click here to complete the survey.

careThe Intensive Care Society Seminar

09 April 2010, Churchill House, London

The first part of this seminar will focus on updates on the evolving definitions and diagnosis of acute kidney injury, our ability to predict renal outcome and current evidence for the dose of renal support when indicated.

This will include recent data from consensus meetings and recently published original research. We will then hear from a specialist in renal transplantation medicine who will give us a nephrologist's view of AKI and how the recovery of the transplanted kidney may provide insight in to mechanisms of AKI in critical care.

Finally we will focus on the interaction of other organ failures with AKI. This will include both the influence of other organ failures on renal function and how AKI may affect the function of other organs.

A comprehensive three-day course on dialysis and the management of patients with end stage renal failure

9-11 June 2010
Sir William Wells Atrium, Royal Free Hospital, London

The management of end stage renal failure by dialysis forms a central component of all renal units.  However, it is often the least intensively taught aspect of nephrology training.  This in-depth course is a thorough introduction to dialysis, from basics to new developments.  Expert faculty will provide comprehensive coverage of all aspects of dialysis and ESRF through a mixture of informal lectures and workshops.  Although the course is aimed at Specialist Registrars in nephrology, it will also be of interest to other health care professionals involved in the management of patients with chronic renal failure.
