According to Dr Donal O'Donohue, the NHS (England) Clinical Director for Renal Services, it looks likely that proteinuria will be added to the Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF) for 2008-9. The QOF is the means by which General Practitioners (primary care physicians) receive extra remuneration for achieving specific performance targets. More info from the tsar's blog.
According to NHS Employers the wording of the new QOF Indicator is:
Chronic Kidney Disease
CKD4 becomes CKD5 – changes highlighted in bold CKD5: The percentage of patients on the CKD register with hypertension and proteinuria who are treated with an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I) or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) (unless a contraindication or side effects are recorded) |
