At the October 2004 General Meeting the Association approved the establishment of an Education and Research Board, to match the Clinical Affairs Board, and chaired by the President. From 2007 each of the two boards is chaired by one of the two vice presidents and the ERB has been renamed Academic Affairs Board.

The President will convene at least two meetings a year of the Education & Research Board, each meeting to be held at least one month before a meeting of the Executive Committee.
The President will provide a written report to the Executive Committee and will lead discussion at the Executive Committee on this report.

The Education & Research Board will concern itself with all aspects of local and national policy and activity relevant to training, education and research in renal medicine and renal science.
By integrating and co-ordinating the work of the four committees represented on the Board, the goal will be to strengthen the contribution of the Renal Association to these areas of activity.
The Education & Research Board will be actively involved in supporting training education and research involving all constituencies represented within the Association’s membership including consultants, both academic and NHS; clinical trainees; non-consultant career grade clinicians; and renal scientists who are not clinicians.
