The database of units is maintained directly by local staff in each Unit. At the bottom of each page is the date on which it was last updated. If things are missing or incorrect, you should usually contact the unit directly.
Instructions for Unit Administrators about editing their pages are now below. If you're still stuck, email the webmaster at firstname.lastname@example.org.

What is the address (URL) for our unit's webpage?
These pages are generated dynamically from a database, generating urls with the form units.renal.org?c=yourlogin
This is just about OK as a link but not easy to quote. There are two simple alternatives:
- Direct people to units.renal.org with the instruction to choose the link to your unit on that page.
- Buy your own domain name, such as http://www.wiganrenal.org (lots of companies offer domain names, look around for best price) and set up auto-forwarding to your unit's webpage. This will cost a bit but probably less than £100 per annum.
- In these era of excellent search engines, an easy url is no longer as important, probably most people will search for the unit name (try searching on "Bradford renal unit", or your own - it will find these pages).

The map's wrong
The location of units on the maps is automatically determined by the postcode entered by the Unit Admin. If it matches one of our pre-calculated locations, it should be spot on - i.e. right on a hospital, but not usually right on the renal unit (zoom in using the + button on the map to test this). If the postcode isn't on our precise database, a less accurate location based on the first half of the postcode is substituted. Let us know if it's not good enough, as more accurate coordinates can be entered manually. We built our own, but it's recently got much easier to put Google maps on your own website if you like, it's character-building.
I can't cope with this. I'm handing the responsibility on to someone else
That's fine, just give them the username and password, and make sure that whoever deals with queries is correctly listed on your webpage.
Someone has cracked our password and is posting pornography on our page
You should tell us about this. We'll give you a new password.
I'd like a do-it-yourself website, or Google maps or something, what do I do?
There are various ways to do this now. Izyt.com made ours from scratch but there are various tools available.
How do I complete or edit our page?
You will have received an email providing a login name and password for your unit. If you didn’t, or have lost them, email the website manager (see top of page).
- After the Unit Administrator's login you will see the list of units with ‘logged in successfully’ at the top.
- Click on your centre. At the top you will see ‘This is your page. Perhaps you would like to edit it.’
- Click on edit it to get to a form.
- Fill in the spaces – then, as soon as you click on ‘submit’, your information is viewable on the web.
- Do one mini-table (block) at a time then click on Submit.
- You will see at the top of the page the message ‘The database has been updated. View your page’ View is a link for previewing the modified page. You can review it and update it immediately, or come back later.
IN MORE DETAIL:
- Fill in one table, then press ‘submit’ before going on to the next. Taking them in turn:
General info: Unit's name – units are listed alphabetically, so put a localising name first, e.g. Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, rather than RI Edinburgh; and in large cities the city name first, e.g. London – Edgeware. But you can change the name that your unit is listed as, you don’t need to stick with the name we listed you by initially.
MAP: your location on the Google map is determined by your postcode, so the arrow should hit your hospital accurately, but probably not the right building. If your postcode isn’t on our (limited) database, the system substitutes a less accurate location determined by the first half of your postcode, and we are aware of other imprecisions. We can insert more accurate coordinates manually if it’s not good, please test by zooming in.
Satellite units: each satellite has a separate page. When you select a hub unit on a satellite’s page and press ‘submit’, the satellite is automatically listed on the hub unit’s page. You may want to put minimal information in for your satellite units, and instead just refer readers to the central unit. This is up to you.
Unit not listed? When you want to add a new unit or satellite, contact the webmaster (see top of page) who will create a new blank page for you.
Image: uploading your own image will remove the default image. Size on screen depends on pixels; max width of 500-600 pixels is recommended; 350-500 looks good. File size is ideally less than 50k, and we have set 200k as the max allowed – if you attempt a larger one it shouldn’t upload. You will need a photo-editor of some type to alter pixels and file size. gif or jpeg (jpg) formats are acceptable, and filenames must end with any of .gif/.jpeg/.jpg. You can choose to illustrate anything, or several things by making a composite image. Your computer's store of recent pages can make the image upload tricky to use if you have multiple attempts. If you get stuck, send the image to us (contact details at top of page).
Telephone number: a single central number is best here. Otherwise, choose someone.
Holiday dialysis enquires: phone or fax number or email address or any combination, but people increasingly like email. Repeat contact info from above if you like, or write ‘As above’.
Email address: a generic address such as "email@example.com" is ideal, if you can persuade your IT people to give you one. (Usually this is set up to automatically forward to a named person, and this can be altered if they are away). Your entry in this box automatically becomes a ‘link’ on the webpage, so include only a single email address in this box.
Website addresses: these allow you to direct people to pages that exist already. These automatically become ‘links’ on the webpage. You must include http:// at the beginning of the address and include only one site per entry or leave blank. You can mention others in the 'About the Unit' section.
Consultants: Separate by commas instead of returns if your list goes on for ever.
Page administered by: so that if your page goes out of date, people in your own unit know who to contact, and who to blame. Add an email address please! (could be the same as the Unit address). This is how the webmaster will contact you if there is a problem.
About the unit: (see below for guidance on practicalities) In this space, put up to 5000 words (less is probably best) describing your unit, its location, etc.. You may already have suitable information written down, for example in job descriptions. Include information suitable for prospective doctors, nurses, other staff, and patients, any of whom may read this. Consider using these headings: General – Location of unit, area served, perhaps a line or two of history, relationship to other units. The service – what is provided and where, by who. Other information – e.g. specific courses, opportunities, or anything else appropriate.
Research and special expertise: These are listed separately to make it possible to list and search research interests/ expertise/ opportunities nationally. Fill this section in in the same way as “About the Unit”. Maximum space allowed is about 5,000 words but that is probably several-fold more than you want to put here.
It is best to write these sections in a word processing programme and keep them somewhere so that you can easily revise them offline and print out versions to scribble on.
- Don’t spend time formatting it beforehand, as this will be lost on transferring it. You can format later.
- When you have written it, save the document as 'text only' (under "Save As ...").
- Then copy the text from that new file into the box.
- Adding formatting is optional, but once you have tried out the system you can add it, as explained below.
How to add formatting (optional – try without first)
It is possible to do some basic text formatting to the completed document. You can make text bold, italic, or underlined, and insert hyperlinks including email links. This is done using ‘tags’ in square brackets. Square brackets should not be used for anything else, but they are the only illegal characters.
To make text bold, put [b] and [/b] tags on either side of the text that you want to appear bold, like this: These tags make [b]words bold[/b] – this phrase would appear on the completed webpage as: These tags make words bold
Similarly for italics use the tags [i] [/i], and for underline the tags [u] [/u], so that: I [i]tried[/i] to turn the [u]handle[/u] but would appear as: I tried to turn the handle but
To make a hyperlink, you use [link=http://] and [/link] tags. The [link=] tag needs to include the web address you want to link to. So to link the text “search engine” to www.google.com, you might write this: People often use a [link=http://www.google.com]search engine[/link] to find things. .... which would appear on the page as: People often use a search engine to find things.
To make an email link, use [email=emailaddress], [/email]. So to make an automatic email link to firstname.lastname@example.org: Contact us by [email@example.com]email[/email] or on the phone number above .... which would appear as: Contact us by email or on the phone number above
Contrary to this example it is generally best to put the full email address in the text, for people who aren’t using an email programme that will automatically link to their web browser. i.e. something like this: Please email us at [firstname.lastname@example.org]email@example.com[/link] which would show as: Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
NOTE: 1. You don’t need to use tags in the ‘email’ or ‘website’ boxes in Table 2, these form links automatically. 2. All url’s must begin http:// for hyperlinks to work.
