The Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee prepares guidelines for the renal community in the UK. The committee comprises the leaders of each of the five modules, chaired by Dr Robert Mactier, robert.mactier2@northglasgow.scot.nhs.uk
The guidelines provide a template for the management of patients with kidney disease in the UK and define the data collected by the Renal Registry. The current guidelines are the 4th edition and their final initial versions were published in modular form between April 2007 and April 2008, replacing the third edition of the Renal Association “Standards” document published in 2002.

About the fourth edition of the guidelines
In commissioning the 4th edition the Clinical Affairs Board considered the term “Clinical Practice Guidelines” more appropriate than the previous term 'Standards'. To ease the task of updating, the document was divided into 5 modules, each drafted by a small group of individuals selected on the basis of their expertise and freedom from potential bias. The modules cover a slightly wider range of topics than the previous document with the notable addition of a section on Chronic Kidney Disease and extended coverage of the medical aspects of kidney transplantation, particularly recipient work-up, the latter written in close liaison with the British Transplantation Society. The British Association of Paediatric Nephrology has adapted the dialysis guidelines for children; these can be read at www.bapn.org/clinical_standards.html
The current UK “Standards” can be compared with those recently produced by other organisations across the world on the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) website www.kdigo.org.
Each module comprises a series of guideline statements with accompanying text to explain how these are derived. The supporting evidence is referenced and audit measures clearly defined.
As the modules are completed they are internally reviewed by the Clinical Practice Guidelines committee before being made available for broader consultation via the Renal Association website. Potential stakeholder organisations are informed as the various modules become available and specifically invited to comment. Comments are fed back directly to module leads via email or Discussion Forums.
Once feedback has been received, the final version of each module is locked and uploaded on the website, replacing the draft. To ease the process of future updates, no printed document will be produced, although a “print ready” copy will be available for download.
