Renal points in 2006 GMS contract Chronic kidney disease has been included in the next GMS contract for GPs. 27 out of a total of about 550 clinical points can be awarded for CKD identification/monitoring. This looks like being a powerful way of ensuring that CKD is recognised and appropriate initial management undertaken. Read details of CKD points (pdf file 200kb); read full list of 2006 revisions (pdf file 300kb) and full listing of 2005 QOF (pdf file 40kb). Note that in addition to the CKD points, other revisions include blood pressure monitoring/control under 5 different CHD, stroke, diabetes and blood pressure headings, estimation/treatment of microalbuminuria in 2 diabetic headings, use of ACE inhibitors in heart failure in one, and measuring of eGFR in diabetics and patients on Lithium. You can read the DoH page on GMS contract, but best of all see the report of outcomes by region down to Health Board/PCT (and eventually, by practice), on the www.gpcontract.co.uk website. In the maps section the data can be accessed from Google maps.

National audit and outcomes project The Renal Association in partnership with the British Transplant Society, British Renal Society, Clinical Effectiveness unit of the Royal College of Physicians and CSPI Associates have been successful in bidding for the scoping exercise to inform the Healthcare Commission Renal Audits which are currently being developed. Read the proposal (pdf file, 244kb). The intention is to build on the excellent foundation of the Renal Registry. Please send comment and suggestions to the project manager Andrew Scott, andrew.scott@cspi-associates.com, or the lead clinician Donal O'Donoghue, Co-Chair of the Renal Advisory Group. Regular updates will be provided via the monthly Association e-news.

Modernisation Modernising Services for Renal Patients was published in July 2005. These resources can be adapted for use in other renal services. More info about the project (NHS Modernisation Agency website). Link to the full document from the top right of that page.

Renal NSF Renal NSF published by DoH in two parts in January 2004 and February 2005 (Part 1 on dialysis and transplantation, and Part 2 on chronic kidney disease, acute renal failure, end of life care) - read on the DoH website. There is also an almost unfindable but useful DoH Renal Page for links to the Renal Services Implementation Strategy (also published January 2004), written to support implementation of the NSF, and other 'NSF-related publications'. Some other documents here are variably usefully introduced and explained. There is a useful account of the IT information strategy at e-health-insider.com
